Julie Eizenberg, FAIA, LFRAIA

Julie Eizenberg, FAIA, FRAIA, Founding Principal at Koning Eizenberg Architecture brings an empathetic perspective to the design of award-winning and inclusive community places. She is currently serving as a Director of the Council on Open Building. She was inducted into the National Academy of Design in 2022, awarded the American Academy of Arts & Letters Architecture award in 2021, and honored as a Design Leader in Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture Awards in 2020. In 2019, she was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal and in 2012, the AIA | LA Chapter Gold Medal. Julie has also written influential monographs including “Architecture isn’t just for special occasions” which highlights the value of social engagement as a rich reserve for design and “Urban Hallucinations” which examines how the idyll of local shapes neighborhoods.

    This program will discuss opportunities to strengthen neighborhood through an analysis of housing typologies and case studies of housing and community buildings. Work discussed will include new completed work like the Arroyo affordable family housing, and the Park as well as a competition entry for an affordable housing development in Chicago. Featured community resources will include adaptive reuse projects like the Museumlab which brought an abandoned historic library back to life. Participants will learn about strategies that build connections between residents and street that foster inclusivity and strengthen neighborhood through analysis of both affordable and market rate multi-unit housing. Refreshments will be provided during the presentation from 1:30-3:30 pm, co-sponsored by FOCUS ON ENERGY®.
